Meet Bella, a 16-year-old from Kebbi, Nigeria, whose life was transformed by Project HOPE, a global non-profit that provides medical care, mental health and other support programs to communities worldwide. In a town where 32 percent of the population is illiterate and girls are not encouraged to speak out, Project HOPE provided Bella with new opportunities and training that helped develop her computer literacy and public speaking skills. She now has renewed hope and dreams of becoming a doctor to support her community. Thermo Fisher Scientific colleagues support Project HOPE and youth like Bella through a grant program and volunteer activities. We are committed to supporting programs like Project HOPE to empower people and communities globally.

This week, I joined the US-China Business Council board in Beijing to continue advocating for a stable, fair and predictable business environment for American companies operating in China. The USCBC’s mission is to strengthen the U.S.-China relationship to benefit both countries for the good of the world. As business leaders, we take seriously our role as stewards of the world’s most important bilateral relationship. That’s why I have served as a board member for most of the past decade, including three years as chairman and chairman emeritus. The delegation held productive discussions with senior leaders from Beijing and China’s foreign affairs, commerce, technology and development ministries to reinforce our shared view of the benefits of our countries’ cooperation. We also met with the U.S. Ambassador to China, David Perdue, who has been a strong advocate for the American business community since arriving recently. As American and Chinese trade negotiators met in Stockholm, we were encouraged by the ongoing dialogue on bilateral and global issues. I return from the trip heartened that the U.S. and China can stabilize the business environment and strengthen bilateral relations. Thank you to the USCBC team for being a bridge-builder, promoting cooperation and engagement and advancing economic prosperity for Americans, Chinese and all people. And, as always, thank you to our Thermo Fisher Scientific colleagues all over the world, including our team in China, for your passion for fulfilling our Mission to enable our customers to make the world healthier cleaner and safer.

Our colleagues in Brno, Czech Republic, share more than just scientific and technological expertise—they also compete together in a local hockey league. How do skills from working with electron microscopes and spectrometers translate into team play? What do they discover about teamwork when they trade their workstations for the ice rink? Lubomir and his teammates show us how they work together to support our customers, and each other, on and off the ice.
